Strides for Life
This Sunday, October 5th, all Pacific Rowing Club athletes will participate in the "Strides for Life" Memorial fundraiser for colon cancer. This event was founded in memory of Dylan Cappel, who was a local junior rower who went onto to row at the University of Wisconsin. While there and training for the U.S. National Team, he tragically died of colon cancer.
The Pacific Rowing Club coaching staff has decided to fully support and attend this event for many reasons, the most important being that it is a wonderful organization dedicated to increasing education for all of colon cancer, a very preventable disease.
The event begins at 7:30 am Sunday morning with registration check-in, with the 5k run / walk around Lake Merced beginning at 9 am. The meeting location is in the large parking lot at the intersection of Sunset Blvd. and Lake Merced Blvd., just across from the small pedestrian bridge from the Harding Park Golf Course club building. All participants receive a free t-shirt, sport bag and breakfast at the end of the run. We anticipate being done with this event no later than 12 noon, if not sooner.
To register for this event, please go to www.stridesforlife.org for more information, and to register as an individual. The cost is $35 on-line, and $45 the day of the event. All PRC parents, friends and family are also welcome to register and participate!
All PRC athletes, novice and varsity are encouraged and expected to register for this event. Because of our participation, please note that Saturday's rowing practice for all squads is cancelled.
We look forward to seeing all of you there to support this great organization and its mission!

This Sunday, the PRC varsity squads will begin our new year of racing for the 2008-09 season by attending the HEAD OF THE PORT regatta in West Sacramento. The race will take place on the course used by River City Rowing Club and UC Davis in the deepwater port located adjacent to their boathouses. This race will be used as a "warm-up" for the Head of the American regatta, scheduled for Oct. 25th. Our varsity coaches will be closely watching our crews to see where their performance levels are, and what changes need to be made as we start the Fall racing season.
As this will be a varsity-only event, our travels should be easier being most everyone already knows the usual protocol for such road trips. As usual, all athletes MUST travel in parental carpools to and from the event. This is for the safety of all the athletes.

This regatta will have a "head race" format, meaning all crews start at the "head of the river" and race downstream. It is also the type of race where the crews do not start together; rather, they start a boat every 10 seconds, and each crew "races the clock" to see who can post the fastest time. Of course, all the crews do try to catch and pass one another, making for some great racing. The race distance is 3 miles, and there are bike paths on both sides of the lake which allow spectators to ride along and watch the crews racing in several locations. You might even see wild turkeys, and maybe some rattlesnakes, so be alert while enjoying the day!

This Sunday, March 14th 2010, the Pacific Rowing Club will be racing in its 4th league race of the season in Oakland, CA against teams from Los Gatos, Serra HS and the Oakland Strokes. The race will take place on the Oakland Estuary, an open body of water that serves as a shipping channel and inner harbor near the Port of Oakland. The race will be 2000 meters long, starting at the bottom of Coast Guard Island, and finishing at the Jack London Aquatic Center boathouse, home of the Oakland Strokes. Being only 4 teams are racing, the day is expected to be shorter than our last regatta, with the exception that the Pacific women will be returning to the PRC boathouse to wash and rig boats after the day's racing.
SPECIAL NOTE: Daylight Savings Time begins on Sunday morning--YOU WILL HAVE TO SET YOUR CLOCKS 1 HOUR FORWARD WHEN YOU GO TO BED SATURDAY NIGHT. VERY IMPORTANT--PLEASE REMEMBER--NO LATE ROWERS--RESET YOUR CLOCKS!
